Q: Tell us a little bit about you.

My name is Kiran Mitra. I am currently in high school in the United States. I am an avid learner and have become very interested in AI. I am also interested in the arts, particularly music.

Q: What are your hobbies?

I have a creative side. I love to make crafts, create art, play music, embroider, paint, and take photos. I also enjoy cooking with my family. Photography is my main hobby, so here are a few pictures that I am proud of:

Rome, Italy
Cherry Blossoms
White Blossoms
Backyard Treasures
Peony Painting (Bonus!)

Q: Anything you do (outside of school, of course)?

I am a musician. I have played piano for a decade now and play flute in a concert band and tenor saxophone in a jazz band. I am also trying to teach myself guitar from YouTube tutorials. I am also an athlete. I play basketball, tennis, volleyball, and badminton competitively. I also engage in my hobbies when I have free time and enjoy watching television.

Q: Why are you studying artificial intelligence?

I wanted to go into medicine as a radiologist. After some time, I realized that radiology is essentially interpreting information and recognizing patterns, such as in X-rays, which is what computer vision is! I was introduced to computer science and artificial intelligence in middle school and was amazed by all of its applications in healthcare. I hope that in the future I can help incorporate AI into the medical field.

Q: What was your AI Scholars experience like? Who was your instructor and what was it like working with them? What project did you work on?

My AI Scholars experience was nothing short of amazing! It was a truly wonderful experience and I learned a lot during that summer. My instructor was Harry Sha and he was a great instructor for the summer course. The environment was very supportive and I never felt discouraged when I made a mistake and I was empowered to ask questions and delve into multiple AI topics.

The project I worked on was Object Detection for Cars. We explored the many facets of computer vision and methods to detect objects in video and images. We learned how to use YOLO (You Only Look Once) to detect objects relevant to cars from a video feed.

Currently, I am still in the INSPIRIT AI Program and am taking the AI & Healthcare Deep Dive course. My instructors, Anna Sappington and Sharon Newman, have helped me solidify my understanding of AI and have let me explore more applications of AI in the medical field.

Q: What AI topic will you be writing about in your blog?

I will be writing about AI and its applications in the healthcare industry, ranging from topics like mental health to drug development.

Q: Why should they be interested in your blog?

My blog is for anyone with an interest in Artificial Intelligence or healthcare. I hope to cater to both audiences because, soon, AI will be integrated into the healthcare system. In fact, a lot of current research studies are using AI to help with detection of trends and analysis. In the future, AI will be an assistive tool to those working in the medical field, so it is important to be aware of it.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve with your blog?

I am hoping to learn more about AI and to help others learn more about it as well. I hope that others will become more interested in AI and what it has to offer, not just in healthcare, but in every field imaginable.
